RESOLUTION #13046, January 24, 2000

 

INTRODUCED BY Victor E. Callahan, County Legislator

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, the safety of the citizens of Jackson County is of primary importance; and,

 

WHEREAS, the safety of our children is also of utmost concern to our community; and,

 

WHEREAS, with the increase of school violence which threatens the safety of our children, there is an urgent need for our citizenry to take positive steps to protect and insure the safety of children at school; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Department is in need of additional dispatchers and sheriff's deputies in order to more efficiently respond to 911 emergency calls; and,

 

WHEREAS, population trends show that the fastest growing area of Jackson County is the eastern part of the county; and,

 

WHEREAS, the County's justice facilities are in need of expansion and renovation, given the rapid increase in population and the growing number of lawsuits filed; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Legislature is considering Ordinance 2988, introduced on January 24, 2000, which would submit to the qualified voters of Jackson County a question authorizing Jackson County to collect a Safe Schools and Safe Community sales tax at the rate of one-quarter of one percent for a period of eight years solely for the purpose of improving the public safety and the justice services provided by Jackson County; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Legislature intends the proceeds of this tax to be used in the amounts and for the purposes as set out in the attached schedule; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that it is the intent of the Legislature that the proceeds of the Safe Schools and Safe Community Sales Tax be expended in conformance with the attached schedule.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
