WHEREAS, the Constitution of Missouri states that, " all men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences; that no human authority can control or interfere with the rights of conscience ;" and,
WHEREAS, ignorance about the faith of another fellow human should not lead to misunderstanding or war, but instead, each of us must understand the true mutual similarities and humanness of all religions; and,
WHEREAS, each community of faith deserves the recognition, respect, and protection of all others; and,
WHEREAS, there are an estimated 6 million Muslims in the United States, and more than 1.2 billion worldwide; and,
WHEREAS, the period December 31, 1997, to January 29, 1998, is the holy month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar; and,
WHEREAS, Muslims observe this month by abstaining from food, drink, and bodily pleasures from sunrise to sunset as ordered by God in order to remind themselves that others hunger, and to relieve the hunger of others, to practice discipline through self-denial, to nurture family relationship, and to strengthen commitment to God; and,
WHEREAS, Muslims also commemorate this month of Ramadan by recalling the first revelations of the Qur'an by God to the Prophet Muhammad over 1400 years ago; and,
WHEREAS, observing the month of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam; and,
WHEREAS, many citizens of Jackson County, Missouri are not familiar with the meaning of Ramadan to their Muslim neighbors; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature does hereby proclaim December 31, 1997, to January 29, 1998, as a month of special assistance to the needy, in the spirit of
RAMADAN
and urges the citizens of Jackson County, to recognize the dedication and service of Muslims as an important part of the fabric of our great county...Attorney
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
