INTRODUCED BY   Terry Young, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, on February 17, 2001,  Blue Springs South totaled 125 points, edging out of the Missouri Class 4A Wrestling Championship fellow Kansas City area school and defending state champion Oak Park, which scored 118.50; and,

WHEREAS, eight Blue Springs South wrestlers participated in the event, with each member winning at least two matches; and,

WHEREAS. team members, weight classes and win-loss records for the season were: Josh Jones, 103 pound weight class, (36-5); Joe Wheeler, 119 pound, (24-8); Mike Wheeler, 130 pound, (42-4); James Williamson, 135 pound, (40-8); Jared Opp, 171 pound, (30-6); Jeff Foust, 189 pound, (45-0); Shawn Watzlawick, 215 pound, (23-13); and Jordan Opp, 275 pound, (35-15); and,

WHEREAS, South captured the state trophy with six medalists, a school record; and,

WHEREAS, Jared Opp and Jeff Foust each captured first place in their individual classes; Josh Jones and Mike Wheeler each took second place; Jordan Opp won fourth place and James Williamson won fifth place; and,

WHEREAS, the entire state championship rested on the 189-pound match, in which Jeff Foust dominated 16-0  over Oak Park's  Keith Kuenzel; and,

WHEREAS, many were skeptical of South winning a championship because the team placed 30th last year and usually did not come together as a team in the post season; and,

WHEREAS, Kendal Koch, in his first year coaching the team said,  "The thing that wins it is the hard work and trust.  Every one of the eight guys that came down scored and played a big role in this;"  therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Blue Springs South wrestling team upon capturing the school's first team championship in any sport, winning the Class 4A title at the Annual Missouri State Wrestling Championship.
