Body

WHEREAS, Edwin T. Hood devoted his professional life, from 1970 until 2008, to teaching law at UMKC, beginning his career as an Associate Professor of Law, and later becoming a Ruby M. Hulen/Emeritus Professor of Law; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood has taught twenty-one different courses during his career at UMKC, with an emphasis on the fundamentals of tax law, tax accounting and estate planning; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood has engaged in a wide variety of activities and initiatives benefitting the Kansas City community, including acting as Co-Director of the Maintenance of a Multiracial Neighborhood Grant, Co-Director of The Tenant Selection Process of Public Housing in Kansas City, Missouri Grant, and Director of the Internal Revenue Service Grant to support the Low Income Tax Payer Clinics; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood founded the Low Income Tax Payer Clinic in Kansas City, served as a Director for the 49/63 Neighborhood Coalition, and has been a member of the Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood has brought great distinction and honor to UMKC because of his wide variety of distinguished appointments, including the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Suffolk University, and Visiting Professor of Law at various schools around the world, including University College in Dublin, Ireland, the University of Miami, the Academy of International Taxation in Taiwan, the University of Iowa, Syracuse University and Hofstra University; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood has also had distinguished appointments as Associate Professor of Law at Willamette University, Teaching Fellow at New York University School of Law, and Director of the UMKC Ireland Summer School Program; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood's legal career has caused him to be called upon for many fund raising efforts at UMKC, as well as several appointments at law firms throughout the Kansas City area; and,

 

WHEREAS, throughout Professor Hood's notable career, he has had more than fifty articles and treatises in the field of estate planning and taxation published; and,

 

WHEREAS, Professor Hood's wife, Mary, his four children, Heidi, Anna, Catherine and Matthew, three sons-in-law James, Rodolphe and Brad, and six grandchildren Aidan, Emmett, Brendan, Edouard, Aurelie and Charlie, all share in the celebration of his retirement; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes and commends Professor Edwin T. Hood upon his retirement from UMKC Law School, thanks him for his service to this community, and wishes him the best in all future endeavors.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
