IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION expressing the support of the Legislature for the 17th annual "Juneteenth" celebration to be held June 8-15, 1997. Intro RESOLUTION # 11795, June 9, 1997 INTRODUCED BY Lisa White Hardwick, and Carl W. Bussey, County Legislators Body WHEREAS, "Juneteenth" is a celebration of freedom arising out of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, signed by President Abraham Lincoln; and, WHEREAS, in commemoration of this event, the Black Archives of Mid-America will be presenting the second largest celebration in the nation; and, WHEREAS, activities begin June 8 with a public reception and exhibit of traditional and contemporary quilts at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center; and, WHEREAS, on June 11 there will be a special film screening of two films by Kansas City filmmaker W. Stinson McClendon exploring the lives and accomplishments of African-American inventors Tom Bass and Garrett A. Morgan at the Paseo Academy of Performing Arts; and, WHEREAS, coronation ceremonies for Mr. and Mrs. Juneteenth, Dwayne Crompton, President and CEO of the KCMC Child Development Center, and Georgia Buchanan, owner of All Pro Construction, will be held on June 12 at the Imax Theatre at the Kansas City Zoo in Swope Park, with a guest reception following; and, WHEREAS, also on June 12, the second annual Juneteenth golf tournament will be held in commemoration of the integration of the Swope Park Memorial Golf Course; and, WHEREAS, activities continue on June 13 with the premiere of the play "Amazing Grace," a drama depicting stories of personal transformation from slavery to present day, to be held at the Paseo Academy of Performing Arts, and later in the evening, with a reception to be hosted by the 18th and Vine Collaborative at the Historic Lincoln Building Atrium; and, WHEREAS, other activities continue on June 14 with "Our Sojourn from Slavery to Freedom-Part II" bus tour, the 17th Annual Juneteenth Parade, and the kick-off for the "Buy Black - Our Future" campaign; and, WHEREAS, the Black Archives of Mid-America proudly presents this longstanding tradition of providing a safe and secure holiday for the people of Kansas City, along with many volunteers, businesses, organizations and local governments; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature fully supports the Juneteenth Celebration to be held June 8-15, 1997...Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
