IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION recognizing the Harris Family and, specifically, John Hardin Harris for his many contributions to the growth and development of Eastern Jackson County. Intro RESOLUTION #10995, October 23, 1995 INTRODUCED BY John C. Graham, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, the Harris Family Reunion is a fine tradition which has been passed down annually since the early 1900's; and, WHEREAS, descendants of William and Rhoda Harris gather each year at these reunions to celebrate the past, present, and future of the Harris clan; and, WHEREAS, each year the Harris family honors one of William and Rhoda Harris' fourteen children, and 1995's honoree is John Hardin Harris, born July 20, 1832, near Independence, Missouri, and raised on a farm in Blue Springs, Missouri; and, WHEREAS, the first Harris reunion was held at John's home in 1911, and later reunions began meeting at what is now named the Harris Memorial Park in Lee's Summit, Missouri; and, WHEREAS, John Hardin Harris, a self-made man, had profound influences on the cities of Lee's Summit, Greenwood, and Blue Springs, and surrounding areas, as John was an early pioneer who witnessed the growth of these areas, and through persistent labor came to own a great deal of land on which he bred cattle and mules and stocked deer; and, WHEREAS, on September 10, 1995, 163 descendants attended the 85th Annual Harris Family Reunion held at Harris Memorial Park in Lee's Summit, and, WHEREAS, on October 17, 1995, current members of the Harris family attended the Lee's Summit City Council meeting where they and their ancestors, including John Hardin Harris, were recognized for their role in the growth and development of Lee's Summit and the Blue Springs area; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the Harris Family and, specifically, John Hardin Harris for his contributions to Eastern Jackson County. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
