Body

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will be hosting an Alpha Week from  June 20th through June 25th; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity in the United States established for men of African descent and was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1906; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Beta Lambda Chapter in Kansas City was chartered in 1919 and was the first Alumni Chapter west of the Mississippi River, as well as the first Alumni Chapter to win Chapter of the Year Award for three consecutive years; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has unceasingly promoted education, social, and economic improvements within the African-American Community; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Beta Lambda Chapter's commitment to the community includes such events as an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast, the Alpha Male Sexuality Awareness Program in collaborative efforts with the March of Dimes, the "Voteless People is A Hopeless People" voter registration program, and the Leadership Development Institute for high school students; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Chapter is also involved in a number of other organizations including the NAACP, the Urban League, and the Black Healthcare Coalition; and,

 

WHEREAS, in addition to an extraordinary community involvement, the Beta Lambda Chapter also encompasses an educational component, the Beta Lambda Institute, which sponsors a Youth Diversion Program in connection with the Juvenile Justice System of Jackson County: "Go to High School, Go to College"; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has given the citizens of the community its love and devotion by providing them with events and programs that are proven to be successful in bringing about change and well-being, and without the efforts of the Chapter, these achievements would not be possible; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that June 20th through June 25th, 2005 is Alpha Week in Jackson County, and that the Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., be and hereby is recognized and commended for their outstanding dedication and service provided to the African-American community.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
