Body
WHEREAS, Johanna Merwin was selected by John Brown University in northwest Arkansas to receive one of just five presidential scholarships the college awards each year; and,
WHEREAS, this scholarship would pay for Johanna's tuition during all four years of school at John Brown; and,
WHEREAS, in order to be eligible for this prestigious award, students had to score at least 29 on the ACT or 1280 on the SAT, and must have maintained a 3.9 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale; and,
WHEREAS, Johanna qualified with a GPA of 4.37 and is ranked eighth in her class of 415; and,
WHEREAS, from the list of eligible students, Johanna was chosen from 140 other students who also went through the dual-interview process; and,
WHEREAS, Johanna intends to major in English and minor in Biblical Studies at whatever college she attends; and,
WHEREAS, Johanna has been on the Principal's Honor Roll, lettered in academics, music and track all four years of high school, received the Eagle Award for being in the top 1% of her class, received the Scholar Athlete Award presented by the Kansas City Star, and received the Senior History Award in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, during her years at Lee's Summit High School, Johanna has been involved in theater productions, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Women's Choir, and the Touch of Class Honor Choir, Track and Field, Student Senate, Spanish Club, Church Worship band, Theater Club, and was elected Prom Queen at Lee's Summit High School in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, Johanna's parents, Russ and Kris, and her siblings, Jenn, Gretchen, Pamela, Caitlin, Laura, and their families, join in Johanna's celebration of this distinguished scholarship; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Johanna Lee Merwin upon her receipt of the prestigious presidential scholarship from John Brown University and wishes her well in all her future endeavors.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
