Body
WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Samuel E. Mann has served the community as Pastor Administrator of St. Mark Union Church and as Executive Director of United Inner City Services for 40 years; and,
 
WHEREAS, Rev. Mann's service has extended to several social service and community development programs, as well as violence prevention and child betterment projects, including a state of the art facility, St. Mark's Child and Family Development Center; and,
 
WHEREAS, Rev. Mann was instrumental in the formation of Operation Break and Build, a street outreach organization developed to assist gang members transform their lives through crisis intervention, and education; and,
 
WHEREAS, Rev. Mann has championed civil-rights causes since the 1960s, marching for sanitation workers in Memphis, TN, and protesting the war in Vietnam with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and was part of the United States delegation that traveled to South Africa upon Dr. Nelson Mandela's release from prison; and,
 
WHEREAS, Rev. Mann is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College, Duke Divinity School, and St. Paul School of Theology, and is the recipient of the NAACP Harold Holiday Award, John M. Swomley Human Rights Award, Elder Statesman of Kansas City, MO Jazz Inductee, Sam Eason Advocacy Award, Black Archives of Mid-America, and Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year Award; and,
      
WHEREAS, Rev. Mann is supported in his civil-rights and community activities by his wife, Dr. Beverlye J. Brown, his three children and seven grandchildren; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature extends best wishes to Reverend Dr. Samuel E. Mann and expresses sincere gratitude for his dedicated service to the community and church.
 
 
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
