A RESOLUTION proclaiming September 15 through October 15, 2023, as Hispanic Heritage Month.

RESOLUTION NO. 21396, September 11, 2023

 

INTRODUCED BY Manuel Abarca IV, County Legislator

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is a national celebration to honor the history, culture, and influence of past generations who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and,

 

WHEREAS, the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began as Hispanic Heritage Week, was signed into law in 1968; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1988 the commemorative week was expanded to a month, from September 15th through October 15th; and,

 

WHEREAS, September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; and,

 

WHEREAS, September 16th and September 18th mark the anniversary of independence for Mexico and Chile, respectively; and,

 

WHEREAS, September 21st marks the anniversary of independence for Belize; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latin communities have played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural fabric, diversity, and prosperity of our nation, contributing to fields such as art, music, literature, science, politics, businesses, and many others; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby proclaims September 15, 2023, through October 15, 2023, as Hispanic Heritage Month; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature requests the downtown Jackson County Courthouse be lit with the colors blue, green, red, white, yellow, incorporating the colors found in Hispanic country flags, from September 25, 2023, through October 8, 2023; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature requests the downtown Jackson County Courthouse and the Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence fly the Hispanic Heritage Flag designed by José Garza.

 

 

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
