Body
WHEREAS, Heidi Simpson, a senior at Lee's Summit North High School, was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist; and,
WHEREAS, National Merit Scholarship winners are chosen from the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies; and,
WHEREAS, Heidi is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Club, the German Club, the Spanish National Honor Society, the German National Honor Society, Theater Club, Book Club, Scholar Bowl, Science Knowledge Bowl, and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to being a Merit Scholarship finalist, Heidi was recently selected for the Missouri Scholars 100 program, a statewide program that honors 100 of the Missouri's top academic students; and,
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship award was founded in 1955 as a privately financed, not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance; and,
WHEREAS, scholarships awarded are underwritten by nearly 500 independent sponsor organizations and institutions as well as with the corporation's own funds; and,
WHEREAS, nearly 1.5 million students throughout the United States entered the 2014 Merit Program as juniors by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of program entrants; and,
WHEREAS, Heidi's parents, Nora Wineland and Craig Simpson, are justifiably proud of their daughter; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Heidi Simpson upon her recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and a Missouri Scholar 100, and extends best wishes to her in all of her future endeavors.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
