Body
WHEREAS a public landfill has been proposed at the southeastern meeting point of the city limits of Kansas City and Lee's Summit; and,

WHEREAS the proposed site of said public landfill is within one mile of Jackson County's Longview Lake Park and near the watershed of Longview Lake, which poses a significant risk to the environmental safety of an important public asset; and

WHEREAS this site location is within very close proximity to Summit Point Elementary School; and,

WHEREAS it is the responsibility of the county to protect the health of its citizens and many studies have confirmed increased risks of health issues for individuals living in close proximity to landfills; and,

WHEREAS a project of this nature would negatively impact local economic development including, but not limited to, decreased property values and negative impacts for future development; and,

WHEREAS Jackson County Legislature expresses its support of local recycling programs and recognizes many local organizations that participate in reducing waste; and,

WHEREAS the Jackson County Legislature expresses support for Senate Bills 739, 769 and 1751, all of which amend the requirement of a governing body's approval of permits for landfill sites from one-half mile to one mile; now therefore,
